Emergency Protection Order only lasts 7 days❓What happens after it expires⁉️
Many people ask:
How long does an Emergency Protection Order (EPO) last?
The answer is: 7 days.
An EPO is a short-term, emergency measure intended to provide immediate protection during the most dangerous period.
What happens after the 7 days expire?
There are generally two approaches:
I. Apply for an Extension
If the risk still exists, an application for extension may be made.
II. Apply for an Interim Protection Order (IPO)
More commonly, within these 7 days, the victim has already lodged a police report and the police have initiated an investigation.
Once the investigation begins, the victim may apply for an IPO.
What Is an IPO?
📌 A temporary protection order
📌 Remains in effect during the police investigation
📌 Continues until the investigation is completed or the perpetrator is formally charged in court
In simple terms:
EPO provides 7 days of emergency protection;
IPO provides continued protection throughout the investigation period.
Legal protection is not limited to 7 days—it continues in stages.
